A Labor of Love

Happy Labor day! We have had a very nice weekend just hanging around the house with the exception of today.

Today really felt like a work day, even with John home. William woke up early crying and when I went to pick him up, he was HOT. We scrambled around trying to take his temperature (YOU try to get a temperature on a wiggly boy when the thermometer takes just over a minute) and get him to nurse. Our best guess is that his temperature was between 101-103 degrees. Too hot with everything else going on. I've been keeping a closer eye than usual on his as he just hasn't been himself for the last 3-4 days. He is more irritable about everything. Sleeping, baths, dressing, and diaper changes are now all a supreme effort. Eating in particular has become harder and harder with him refusing to open his mouth and alternately crying through entire feedings for the last few days. But without more to go on, we weren't running off to the doctor's office quite yet. Today was just the topper to a long week which brought us to standing outside the urgent care door this morning before they opened. The verdict: hard to say. His fever was much lower and there wasn't any sign of ear infection or other sickness. The doctor told us to push the fluids (tell me, how do I do that with a kid who cries at the sight of his cup and isn't all the interested in nursing?) and bring him back if the fever gets higher or something else pops up. William continued to be very crabby for the rest of today, hovering over the all out melt down mood. And still refusing almost all solids. Kind of put the kink in my plans to maybe attend an air show, take a family walk or pull out his swimming pool. Although I'm sure I will feel sorry for him later, I'm just glad he is sleeping for right now. It has been a very long day.

Luckily, we had a very enjoyable holiday weekend otherwise. Saturday we ran a few errands and John started working on a bookshelf/cabinet thing for the TV alcove upstairs. On Sunday, we got up and hiked at Cuivre River State park with Liz and Jeff. It was a gorgeous day and great company! William snoozed and looked around from his backpack perch for most of the hike. Unfortunately it was enough of a nap that he was not at all interested in napping when we came home and he really needed to. In the evening we were invited to Margarita Fest 2007 at my coworkers house. It was really nice to see everyone again AND we came home with 2 new pairs of shoes for William. Mary has the BEST party favors! The highlight of the evening was when William was getting sleepy, we handed him off to Jeff. William leaned into Jeff's chest, sighed and then snuggled closer. His eyelids drooped. We all smiled....and then Jeff screeched (screamed? yelled? he made a whole lot of noise anyway). At first he thought that he had been stung by some sort of wasp/bee/insect and then discovered that it was William giving him a little bite! William was quite upset and startled by all the noise, never mind that he started it!

I'll upload some pictures from our hiking adventure tomorrow. I'm off to bed - it has been a long day!

Poor William! I hope he feels better soon. I know exactly the mood you're talking about. In our case, the problem is teething (molars are NO FUN!). Fever, cranky, not interested in food. Hopefully it will pass soon!
